Kremlin warns new German arms plant in Ukraine is a fair target

In This Article:

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a Rheinmetall military factory that recently opened in Ukraine “certainly is” a fair target, speaking to Russian government-owned news agency TASS.

Rheinmetall, based in Dusseldorf, is one of the biggest arms manufacturers in the world, and also the most successful producer of 155mm artillery shells which have become critical for Ukraine in the war against Russia.

The German company announced plans in July 2024 to build four factories in Ukraine which will produce artillery munition and gunpowder, provide vehicle repair and maintenance and air defence systems.

At the time, Russia's Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Spokesman Andrie Nastain said that the facilities would be a “legitimate target” for the country’s army.

Rheinmetall’s CEO Armin Papperger has said that Ukraine needs four million rounds of artillery ammunition to restock its silos in order to fight Russia and prevent a full-scale invasion. He says the plants his company is building will significantly contribute to that war effort. He added that this was not the first threat to Rheinmetall from the Kremlin and that the factories in Ukraine were well protected.

Earlier this year, US intelligence found that Papperger was the target of an assassination plot planned by the Russian government. The plan was one of several to assassinate top defence industry executives in Europe, anonymous US and Western officials told CNN.
