Key earnings reports fill calendar
There are no economic reports on tap today, though several major companies will report earnings.
General Electric, Morgan Stanley, Honeywell, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, and SunTrust Banks all issue results before the opening bell.
China also announced economic-growth numbers, industrial production, and retail sales last night. Those numbers could affect sentiment today, especially toward commodities such as copper.
Next week's calendar is also taking shape as government agencies reopen and issue reports delayed by the shutdown in Washington earlier this month. Existing home sales come on Monday, followed by September's non-farm payroll report on Tuesday.
Mortgage applications and the FHFA Housing price index come out on Wednesday. Thursday brings weekly jobless claims.
Important names announcing earnings include McDonald's and Texas Instruments on Monday. Delta Air Lines, DuPont, EMC, and Amgen report the next day.
Wednesday brings numbers from the likes of Boeing and Caterpillar. Thursday's roster includes Ford, Amazon.com, and Microsoft.
