Kansas City investors speak on worries as markets plummet

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Dow Jones average fell more than 1600 points on Thursday in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement of widespread tariffs.

Local investors who spoke with FOX4 all expressed hesitation and uncertainty, echoing what the stock market showed earlier in the day.

“I’m a little disconcerted,” said Catherine Kolkoski.

She said it was surprising to see tariffs imposed on some nations.

“You just wonder who’s doing their research or who is doing their homework. It doesn’t feel like a lot of people are.”

Cindy Sianez told FOX4 that she had divested from the stock market when President Trump took office.

“I’ve never liked the direction he’s going in,” she said.

“I didn’t vote for him.”

She shared that she had chosen to invest in government stocks and markets overseas.

“I think we’re going to lose a lot of people’s tourist money from all this,” Sianez said.

“It’s not going to be good. He’s not going to raise the economy by doing all this. It’s just going to hurt us more.”

Other folks, like Philip Loffin, said that they knew there’d be a hit and are waiting to see what happens in the coming weeks.

“I think the best thing is to just stay calm and let’s see if our leaders can get this worked out and hope for the best,” Loffin said.

“I think it’s going to sting for a while, and maybe the United States will get a better deal out of it. But the damage will be done. And I think a lot of this could have been solved with some open communication and not hasty judgments.”

Jonathan Puckett says that the downs and ups are all a part of investing.

“It’s going to bounce back. I mean, I’m not too worried about it. The stock markets like a roller coaster. Don’t jump off and you won’t get hurt.”

He said that market conditions will either improve, or President Trump will change course.

“The last time the economy was doing weird stuff, he changed his mind. So, if it starts taking a hard turn, I think he’ll just be like, ‘Oh, yeah, this didn’t work,’ and go back in a different direction.”
