Japan lawmaker Seko eyes one month for state of emergency over coronavirus

TOKYO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Japan's government should declare a state of emergency over coronavirus for a month and decide later to extend it as needed after examining its effects, a senior ruling party lawmaker, Hiroshige Seko, said on Tuesday.

Seko made the comment after Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said the government was working toward a decision on Thursday to declare a state of emergency.

Local media reported on Monday that preparations were being made for a state of emergency that would take effect by Friday and last about a month to curb a surge in coronavirus cases. (Reporting by Yoshifumi Takemoto; Writing by Tetsushi Kajimoto; Editing by Tom Hogue)
