Internet providers ramp up competition in Northeast Florida: Here's what we know

If you've ever been hit with a buffering screen while watching your favorite TV show, you've probably thought about switching internet services, whether that's upgrading your current package or finding a new provider all together.

New deals and internet companies seem to pop up regularly for the opportunity to win over new business. These providers make sure to highlight all sorts of benefits of their packages, including who has the highest MBPS (megabits per second), the lowest prices or the most freebies that come with signing onto a deal.

AT&T

You may already know AT&T offers cellphone coverage, but it also provides internet access in most areas of the country and is in the process of expanding its fiber optics offerings, which it currently has in a few states and areas, including Jacksonville. Other features AT&T boasts related to its internet service include security options and a Smart Home Manager app from which users can see all the devices hooked up to their internet and monitor and control them. For example, users can set time limits on internet access allowed on tablets.

Customers can expect a base price of $55 per month for “Internet 18,” with speeds up to 18 MBPS, but additional fees, including equipment and internet speed, may be applicable. Pricing and offerings, such as fiber optics, also vary based on location.

IQ Fiber

IQ Fiber specializes in fiber optics, which transits information as light pulses through glass or plastic fiber in underground cables to provide internet access. This local internet company began offering service to different areas of Jacksonville in 2022. Now it offers access in Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, San Marco, Mandarin, Fleming Island, Orange Park and other parts of Northeast Florida with areas, including Gainesville, set to come online soon. IQ Fiber is constantly expanding, with a recent $18 million investment in these efforts last month.

Customers can expect to pay the following monthly with IQ Fiber:

  • $85 for the fastest speed, 1,000 MBPS

  • $75 for the middle speed, 500 MBPS

  • $65 for the slowest speed, 250 MBPS

T-Mobile

T-Mobile offers 5G internet at home with plenty of perks and discounts to attract consumers. It also has a 15-day “test drive” option to help customers test the service before deciding whether they want to make the switch and cancel another contract. It also has a program to help pay for cancellation fees from contracts with other internet providers.
