What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Cerus?

Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

As you can see, institutional investors have a fair amount of stake in Cerus. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. If multiple institutions change their view on a stock at the same time, you could see the share price drop fast. It's therefore worth looking at Cerus' earnings history below. Of course, the future is what really matters.

Investors should note that institutions actually own more than half the company, so they can collectively wield significant power. It looks like hedge funds own 8.2% of Cerus shares. That catches my attention because hedge funds sometimes try to influence management, or bring about changes that will create near term value for shareholders. ARK Investment Management LLC is currently the largest shareholder, with 18% of shares outstanding. The second and third largest shareholders are Baker Bros. Advisors LP and BlackRock, Inc., with an equal amount of shares to their name at 8.2%. Additionally, the company's CEO William Greenman directly holds 0.6% of the total shares outstanding.

We did some more digging and found that 6 of the top shareholders account for roughly 52% of the register, implying that along with larger shareholders, there are a few smaller shareholders, thereby balancing out each others interests somewhat.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. Quite a few analysts cover the stock, so you could look into forecast growth quite easily.
