We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Kerry Group plc (ISE:KRZ).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock on the market. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

Kerry Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive Director, Gerry Behan, sold €1.0m worth of shares at a price of €94.41 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of €104. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 18.8% of Gerry Behan's holding. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Gerry Behan.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 1289 shares worth €120k. But they sold 11009 for €1.0m. Does Kerry Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Kerry Group insiders own about €28m worth of shares. That equates to 0.2% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
