Insiders At JPMorgan Chase Sold US$219m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

In This Article:

In the last year, many JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

JPMorgan Chase Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chairman & CEO, James Dimon, sold US$150m worth of shares at a price of US$183 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$243, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 9.6% of James Dimon's holding.
