Many Apollo Global Management, Inc. (NYSE:APO) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Apollo Global Management
The insider, Leon Black, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$173m worth of shares at a price of US$175 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$133). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 3.27k shares for US$347k. On the other hand they divested 3.27m shares, for US$505m. All up, insiders sold more shares in Apollo Global Management than they bought, over the last year. The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Apollo Global Management shares. Specifically, insiders ditched US$139m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Insider Ownership
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Apollo Global Management insiders own 20% of the company, currently worth about US$15b based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
