indie Semiconductor has partnered with GlobalFoundries to enhance the development of radar systems-on-chip (SoC) for use in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other industrial applications.

This collaboration aims to leverage GlobalFoundries' 22FDX platform to produce SoCs for 77GHz and 120GHz radar applications.

Future vehicles are expected to incorporate at least eight radar sensors to support a variety of functions, including collision warning and emergency braking, Indie said.

indie's 77GHz SoCs are said to be integral to systems that provide long-range detection for safety features such as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, as well as short-range applications like blind spot detection.

These solutions are currently in the advanced design-in stage with a Tier 1 customer that supports multiple automotive OEMs.

The 120GHz SoCs cater to in-cabin applications requiring high resolution for functions like occupant monitoring and vital sign detection.

Already available for customer sampling, Indie's 120GHz SoC supports compact antenna-in-package designs.

indie chief operating officer Michael Wittmann said: “indie has been working closely with GlobalFoundries for several years, and this strategic collaboration for our high-performance radar portfolio builds on the success of an established relationship.

“Our goal is to keep our customers at the forefront of technology in the increasingly competitive automotive sector, and the combination of indie’s design innovation and the foundry’s manufacturing leadership will enable safety-critical radar-based ADAS technologies to be deployed cost-effectively across automotive and industrial mobility applications.”

GlobalFoundries' 22nm fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process technology is pivotal in the design innovation of indie's radar solutions.

This technology enables the integration of various functions and provides the performance and energy efficiency required for responsive, always-on wireless connectivity in automotive ADAS and processing applications.
