Iberdrola España has secured the environmental permit for its first wind farm repowering project in Spain, marking a significant step in the country's energy transition.

Located in Castilla-La Mancha, Albacete, the project is set to modernise the PE Molar del Molinar wind farm by replacing old turbines with fewer, more powerful ones, enhancing energy production by an average of 30%.

The 49.5MW Molar de Molinar wind farm will be upgraded with 11 new 4.5MW Vestas wind turbines, replacing the existing 75 turbines of 660kW.

The advanced wind turbines will have a unit power up to six times greater than the original models, which were among the first installed in Spain more than two decades ago.

This upgrade will not only generate more wind energy but also reduce the visual impact on the landscape, contributing to the efficiency and sustainability of energy generation.

Similarly, Iberdrola España is planning to transition the 48MW Isabela wind farm from 64 turbines of 750kW to 11 Vestas turbines, providing clean energy to approximately 26,000 families.

The projects are expected to positively impact the national economy, involving local companies in the dismantling and construction phases.

Invenergy Huso from A Coruña has been contracted for the Molar del Molinar dismantling while the Marco Group (Huesca), Vázquez y Reino (A Coruña), and Tecinsa from Salamanca are involved in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and substation construction.

This initiative is part of the Circular Repowering programme's first call for grants, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), with the two facilities receiving a total of €22.71m ($24.34m) in grants.

Last month, Iberdrola and Masdar completed turbine installation at their 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm project in Germany.
