Hispano Chamber gives out Hispanic Heritage Awards

Oct. 16—Hotel Albuquerque's parking lot was full and cars stretch out the street on Thursday because of a gala to recognize businesses and Hispanic heritage.

The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce gave out its annual Hispanic Heritage Awards.

"I think people need to recognize the fact ... that the Hispanic or the Latino engine in the United States is kind of moving the economy," said Ernie C'deBaca, the president and CEO of the chamber. "I think we ought to just recognize we are a melting pot in the country."

Though the event was billed as a night to celebrate Hispanic heritage, C'deBaca said the Hispano chamber doesn't exclude based on race or ethnicity. He said about 60% of the chamber's members are Hispanic.
