Here's Why We Think Evergy (NASDAQ:EVRG) Is Well Worth Watching

In This Article:

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Evergy (NASDAQ:EVRG). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Evergy with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.

How Fast Is Evergy Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. It's good to see that Evergy's EPS has grown from US$3.09 to US$3.81 over twelve months. That's a 23% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Evergy is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.1 percentage points to 25%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Evergy Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$15b company like Evergy. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold US$27m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. While their ownership only accounts for 0.2%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
