Herbert Smith Freehills' Indonesia associate firm, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung, has added a restructuring partner in Jakarta.

Debby Sulaiman joins from Ashurst, where she was a senior consultant based in Jakarta. Sulaiman specializes in disputes related to bankruptcy and debt restructuring. While at Ashurst, she was also a partner at the U.K. firm's associate Indonesian firm Oentoeng Suria & Partners. She joined Ashurst in late 2014 as part of a four-person restructuring and insolvency team defecting from O'Melveny & Myers .

So far, three of those four lawyers have left Ashurst; in addition to Sulaiman, former Singapore partner Joel Hogarth went to corporate advisory firm Borrelli Walsh in October last year and former Hong Kong partner Bertie Mehigan joined Howse Williams Bowers around the same time. Jakarta partner Ratih " Ipop " Nawangsari remains at Ashurst and Oentoeng Suria & Partners.

Herbert Smith and Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung have been in association since 2000. Jakarta partner David Dawborn, Singapore partner Brian Scott and Kuala Lumpur partner Vik Tang also advise on Indonesia-related work. Hiswara Bunjamin also promoted regulatory lawyer Viska Kharisma to partner.

Herbert Smith will also see a leadership change in Seoul, where corporate partner Dongho Lee will take over from Lewis McDonald as office managing partner. McDonald will continue his role as Asia head of corporate in Tokyo. Earlier this year, the firm moved former Tokyo partner and Asia head of disputes Peter Godwin to lead its newly opened Kuala Lumpur office.

Lee, a Korean native, was promoted to partner in May 2016, two years after joining the Anglo-Australian firm from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. Justin D'Agostino, Herbert Smith's managing partner for Asia and Australia, said Lee's appointment as Seoul managing partner reflected the firm's strategy of supporting and promoting Korean lawyers. Herbert Smith opened in Seoul in 2013 and was the second U.K. firm after Clifford Chance to launch into Korea.
