Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Tata Projects, in a joint venture (JV), have secured a Rs24.7bn ($287.2m) contract from Tata Power to build a pumped storage project at Karjat in Maharashtra, India.

The Bhivpuri Off-Stream Open Loop Pumped Storage Project has a capacity of 1,000MW.

Tata Projects, an energy, procurement, and construction company, and Tata Power, an integrated power company, form a part of India-based business conglomerate Tata Group.

The scope of work for the 50:50 JV includes the civil and hydromechanical components of the project.

These encompass the construction of a cofferdam, intake structures, head race tunnels, a penstock, a surge shaft, a powerhouse, and a tail race tunnel.

Additionally, the project will involve the creation of a new lower reservoir with a geomembrane facing rockfill dam dam, as well as roads and drains.

The contract also extends to the development of necessary infrastructure works, reviews, and the interface of electromechanical works.

HCC, an engineering construction company, has developed approximately 26% of India's installed capacity in hydropower. The company is involved in several ongoing domestic hydroelectric projects, including the 1,000MW Tehri Pumped Storage System in Uttarakhand.

Its projects span the transportation, power, and water infrastructure sectors.

Recently, the HCC and Tata Projects consortium won a Rs21.91bn contract for an 8.65km corridor of the Indore Metro Phase 1 project.

The JV, with HCC holding a 55% share worth Rs12.5bn, will construct an 11.32km tunnel and seven underground stations using tunnel boring machines.

In October 2024, HCC was awarded a Rs10.31bn contract by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation for bridge construction in the state.

Meanwhile, in January this year, Tata Projects reported progress on Micron Technology’s semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, with completion expected by December 2025.
