Harper Government Invests in Recreational Fisheries Conservation Projects in Prince Edward Island

CORNWALL, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwired - Aug 26, 2013) - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that through the newly established Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program, the Government of Canada will provide funding of up to $490,000 for 10 projects to restore, rebuild and rehabilitate recreational fisheries habitat in Prince Edward Island.

"Recreational fishing is a popular leisure activity in Prince Edward Island that not only brings family and friends together, but also contributes to our economy by attracting tourists and creating jobs," said Minister Shea. "Through partnering with our local groups who work on the ground to conserve fish habitat, the Government of Canada helps promote investments in recreational fisheries habitat restoration in our province, for the benefit of our communities in years to come."

The funding announced today in Prince Edward Island will support effective restoration of fishing habitat through 10 eligible projects across the province. These projects were submitted during the first round of applications for Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnership Program, which closed on July 12, 2013.

The following projects to conserve recreational fisheries habitat will receive funding through the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program in Prince Edward Island:

  • Restore, Rebuild and Rehabilitate Recreational Fisheries in Covehead-Brackley Watershed - Friends of Covehead and Brackley Bay

  • Enhancement of North Side Rivers within the Souris and Area Branch Management Area - Souris & Area Branch - P.E.I. Wildlife Federation

  • Mill River Salmon Enhancement Project - Trout Unlimited Canada - Prince County Chapter

  • Brook Trout Urban Habitat Enhancement Project Ellen's Creek - Ellen's Creek Watershed Group

  • Restoring Brook Trout and Atlantic Salmon Freshwater Habitat on the West (Eliot) River - Central Queens Branch of the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation

  • Salmonid Population and Migration Survey and Habitat Enhancement of Three P.E.l. Watersheds - Prince Edward Island Trappers Association

  • Habitat Restoration for Recreational Fisheries in Three St Peters Bay Watersheds - Morell River Management Co-op

  • Fish Passage Improvement on the Southwest River, P.E.I. - Warren's Pond and Stavert's Pond - Ducks Unlimited Canada

  • Jenkins Project - A More Natural Approach to Fish Passage - Ducks Unlimited Canada

  • Fish Passage Restoration Project - Augustine Cove River - South Shore Watershed Association Inc.

The Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program will make as much as $10 million available over the next two years to support recreational fisheries habitat conservation activities. The funding for projects submitted in the first round of applications provides up to $6.5 million for 104 projects to restore, rebuild and rehabilitate recreational fisheries habitat across the country.
