Grupo Penha, a provider of corrugated cardboard packaging solutions in Brazil, is set to enhance its production capabilities with the installation of an advanced quality control system from Valmet at its Itapira plant in São Paulo state.

The system, scheduled for operations in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, comprises three scanners, a moisturiser system, and automated warp control.

These components are said to have been designed to optimise moisture profiling and reduce warping in paperboard sheets, addressing a critical production challenge that is exacerbated by Brazil's fluctuating climate.

Grupo Penha’s Itapira facility, which specialises in producing corrugated cardboard packaging for various industries, will benefit from the Valmet IQ Warp Measurement System.

Grupo Penha project manager Rodrigo Godoy said: “We are excited to develop this innovative project together with Valmet.

“In Brazil, climate conditions vary greatly from one region to another, making it impossible to effectively control the moisture profile when we receive a paper roll.

“We will be installing this Valmet system on our brand-new corrugator machine, and we hope that Valmet’s technology and know-how will help us solve, once and for all, the chronic problem of paperboard sheet warping and paper roll moisture profiles that we have been facing.”

The system will be installed for two stackers, alongside two Valmet IQ Single-Sided Scanners with IR Moisture Measurements, a Valmet IQ Scanner S with additional IR Moisture and MW Total Moisture sensors, and an IQ Moisturizer equipped with four spray beams for precise moisture control and profiling.

Furthermore, the new system will incorporate IQ Reporting tools for enhanced data collection and process optimisation, ensuring that Grupo Penha's plant maintains its competitive edge in the market.

Valmet Automation Systems business line quality management solutions director Mikko Talonen said: “Valmet is the pioneer and changemaker in the corrugated board industry, providing advanced quality management solutions that combine precise online measurements with cutting-edge control technologies to deliver unmatched quality and performance to our customers.”
