Grants available to businesses that are vandalized

Sep. 3—The city on Tuesday launched a new grant program to help local businesses that have been vandalized.

The Window to Opportunity makes $200,000 available to businesses to offset the cost of replacing or repairing windows.

"We stand by our local businesses and are finding new ways to support them," Mayor Tim Keller said in a statement. "For a small business, the cost of vandalism can be devastating, and folks can get back to business sooner."

Brick-and-mortar business with 25 or fewer employees are eligible for the program, as are nonprofit organization and educational entities within Albuquerque city limits. The grant will reimburse businesses 80% of the total cost or window repair.

There is a maximum reimbursement of $5,000 per business. An additional $1,000 is available for businesses that incorporate "green" glass or security glass.

The vandalism incidents need to be reported and business owners need a police report.

Business can apply for the grants on the city's website.

"By addressing window damage promptly, we can help ensure that our city remains a safe place for everyone, and a supportive place to do business," said Senior Economic Developer Frankie Hermosillo. "We are always looking for ways to adapt to the needs of our local business community and get them the help they need."
