Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely) last week opened a new vehicle assembly plant in Egypt, setting a new milestone in the company’s expansion into markets in the Middle East and Africa.

The plant, located in 6th October City in the Egyptian city of Giza, began producing two of the company’s best-selling models - the Coolray SV based on the BMA platform and the Emgrand midsize sedan. The two models, based on different platforms, are produced on a single production line.

The facility’s annual production capacity is expected to reach 30,000 units per year in the next few years, after additional models are introduced. The plant features some advanced technologies, including laser welding and KUKA industrial robots, to help enhance precision and quality in the manufacturing process.

Geely said in a statement: “Through close collaboration with local partners, the company aims to establish a world-class automotive industry in Egypt, empower the local supply chain, and contribute to the nation’s industrial growth.” The company has also established a network of 45 sales and service outlets across the country so far.

Speaking at the plant’s inauguration last week, Geely Auto Group’s vice president Michael Song stated: “Amid Egypt’s transition toward intelligent mobility, Geely is committed to leveraging its global manufacturing expertise and brand strength, fostering local talent, and collaborating with local suppliers to deliver premium, diverse, and smart mobility experiences for customers.”

Fahad Alghanim, CEO of Geely’s local partner Auto Mobility, added: “As one of the most strategically significant markets in Africa and the Middle East, Egypt continues to draw global attention through its distinct advantages. Geely Auto’s plan for localized production answers the Egyptian government's strategic initiative to strengthen its automotive industry. This endeavor promises to not only drive economic growth but also generate high-quality employment opportunities, injecting fresh momentum into the local economy.”
