Free agent starter Kevin Gausman agrees to five-year, $110 million contract with Blue Jays: report

One of free agency’s biggest prizes is headed back to the AL East.

Starting pitcher Kevin Gausman, one of the top arms available this offseason, has agreed to a five-year, $110 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to reports.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the transaction.

After two stellar seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Gausman joins a stacked rotation at the Rogers Centre alongside Jose Berrios, Alek Manoah and Hyun-Jin Ryu.

The 30-year-old righty made 33 starts in 2021, tossing 227 strikeouts across 192 innings. He went 14-6 with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.042 WHIP for the 107-win NL West winners. He made his first All-Star team, as well.

Gausman previously played for the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds.

Gausman was one of many free agent starters viewed as a potential addition to the Mets rotation. Rumors flew Sunday about Max Scherzer possibly signing in Queens to a record-breaking offer. The Mets are also expected to explore bringing back Marcus Stroman. Gausman’s signing with the Blue Jays could open the door for the Mets to pursue Cy Young winner Robbie Ray, as well.
