Food Lion recalls in-store prepared salad kits due to possible listeria contamination

Food Lion is recalling certain prepared salads that have potential to be contaminated with the bacteria that cause Listeriosis, a foodborne illness.

The recalled salads are the in-store prepared cobb and chef’s salad kits, according to a news release from the North Carolina-based grocery chain. Affected products could have been purchased from the deli department at all Food Lion locations between Dec. 26 and Jan. 10 with a “sell by” date of Dec. 30 to Jan. 10.

Food Lion announced the recall after their vendor alerted the retailer of a potential Listeria Monocytogenes contamination. People who are infected with the bacteria may start to see symptoms — which range in severity — within a few hours, but symptoms may take as long as two to three days to appear, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

People who purchased the salads should not eat them. The items can be returned to Food Lion for a refund equal to twice the purchase price.
