Ferrari has unveiled the 296 Speciale, a high-performance plug-in hybrid berlinetta, ahead of the company’s shift toward full electrification.

The 296 Speciale elevates the 296 Gran Turismo Berlinetta’s (GTB) performance with a combined power output of 880hp, surpassing its predecessor by 50hp and setting a record for rear-wheel-drive production Ferraris.

The heart of this machine is a rear-mid V6 twin-turbo engine paired with an electric motor, which together deliver unprecedented power.

The electric motor, which is sandwiched between the combustion engine and the eight-speed DCT gearbox, can decouple from the engine via an additional clutch, allowing for a pure electric driving mode.

The 296 Speciale's acoustic experience evolves from the 296 GTB, maintaining its distinctive sound profile.

The electric system contributes 315Nm of torque and can generate up to 180cv of power in the new extra boost mode, a 13cv increase over the GTB, thanks to optimised operation and cooling strategies.

Aerodynamically, the 296 Speciale generates 435kg of downforce at 250kph, a 20% improvement over the GTB.

The aerodynamic enhancements draw inspiration from motorsports, particularly the 296 Challenge, to deliver unprecedented solutions for a road car.

Inside, the 296 Speciale's cabin reflects Ferrari's latest design philosophy for special versions, focusing on weight reduction and simplicity.

The interior features extensive use of carbon fibre and Alcantara, with a design language that emphasises a race-focused atmosphere.

To support the 296 Speciale’s increased power, engineers enhanced cooling efficiency without altering radiator size or layout, preserving the thermal balance established in the 296 GTB.

Also, the 296 Speciale's higher power, downforce, and grip result in greater thermal stress on the braking system compared to the 296 GTB.

To address this, airflow to the disc-pad contact area has been increased to enhance heat dissipation and prevent caliper fluid overheating, the company said.
