Four voting members of the Federal Reserve will be speaking on Thursday.
Randal Quarles, vice chair of supervision, will kick things off at 7:15 a.m. ET in Frankfurt, Germany. At 9:30 a.m. ET, Vice Chairman Rich Clarida will speak in Paris and participate in a panel discussion about global shocks and the U.S. economy. A question-and-answer session will follow. And New York Fed President John Williams travels to Puerto Rico on Wednesday to meet with business, government and nonprofit leaders and participate in roundtable discussions about small business and entrepreneurship. Finally, at 5:20 p.m. ET, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard will be speaking about the economic outlook.
Market watchers will be paying close attention to the Fed’s language and tone for more clues on the central bank’s overall economic outlook this year. The Fed indicated that it plans to keep interest rates unchanged for the remainder of this year, and while the markets reacted positively, participants are now curious as to whether a potential rate cut could be on the horizon. Despite the Fed’s words of reassurance that the U.S. economy is still looking solid, investors are growing more concerned that the inverted yield curve might be telling a different story.
