Europe's most active PE investors in tech

UK-based firm Hg ranked as the most active private equity investor in European tech, racking up 28 deals in the first half of 2022, as PE continued to put its faith in the sector.

PitchBook's Q2 2022 European PE Breakdown shows that deal activity was resilient in the first half of the year, with information technology assets accounting for nearly one-quarter of PE deal volume.

The digitalization of business, in part accelerated by the global pandemic, drove record PE deals in 2021 and continues to be a factor in 2022. This year, PE tech deal activity—which spans software, media, telecommunication and ecommerce—has also included investment in sub-sectors such as regulatory tech, insurtech and fintech.

Hg's most recent deal was Dutch B2B software company Leadinfo in July. Prior to that, it sealed a take-private of software company Ideagen in June. It also took part in an $11.5 billion investment in The Access Group, another B2B software company, alongside TA Associates.

The second most prolific investor in the first half of 2022 was Dutch firm Main Capital, which completed 24 deals, including the $53.1 million acquisition of SaaS architecture platform Bizzdesign in June.

Meanwhile, US-based Warburg Pincus completed 20 deals over the same period. Among them was Spain's Woffu, a B2B company that uses biometric devices for shift-management and internal communication, and the acquisition of Informa's pharma intelligence business for $2.6 billion In February.
