Long term investing works well, but it doesn't always work for each individual stock. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding CSC Holdings Limited (SGX:C06) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 78%. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 22% in the last year. On the other hand the share price has bounced 5.9% over the last week.

Because CSC Holdings is loss-making, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over half a decade CSC Holdings reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 9.4% for each year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not that strange that the share price dropped 26% per year in that period. This kind of price performance makes us very wary, especially when combined with falling revenue. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that CSC Holdings shareholders are down 22% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 1.9%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 25% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm.
