Doosan Fuel Cell Company Ltd is poised to enter the South Korean bus market, with its commercial vehicle subsidiary HyAxiom Motors having developed two hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV)-powered models which are currently undergoing certification procedures, according to local reports.
HyAxiom Motors, established by Doosan Fuel Cell's US subsidiary HyAxiom in 2022, is set to become the second automaker to produce hydrogen-powered buses in South Korea after Hyundai Motor Group. The company is understood to be waiting for certification for two 11-metre bus models from the South Korean Ministry of Environment and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, including a low-floor city bus and a high-floor inter-city model.
South Korea’s Ministry of Environment is offering generous subsidies to convert the country’s bus fleet to FCEVs, targeting the introduction of 21,000 units by 2030, as part of the government’s policies to reduce carbon emissions and cut the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. The Ministry is targeting 2,000 FCEV bus sales in 2025.
The automotive industry sees FCEVs as a viable alternative to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), especially for larger commercial vehicles. Current FCEV bus models typically have a range of over 500 km and can be refueled at traditional gas stations equipped with hydrogen storage systems.
