Today brings a handful of corporate results, followed by a deluge of earnings next week.
Progressive, Fastenal, and Infosys issue their numbers before the opening bell today. The only other headline is the relatively unimportant export/import price report at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Monday remains very quiet, with no major events scheduled.
That changes on Tuesday morning, when companies such as Citigroup, Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase, and Wells Fargo announce results. CSX, Intel, and Linear Technology follow after the closing bell.
Wednesday features monthly retail sales, the New York Federal Reserve's Empire Manufacturing Index, producer prices and the national Fed's Beige Book survey. Pre-market earnings include Bank of America, PNC Financial, and mutual-fund giant BlackRock. The afternoon features American Express, Netflix, and eBay.
Thursday is the busiest session, with initial jobless claims, industrial production, the Philadelphia Fed's regional activity index, and NAHB's homebuilder-sentiment index. Goldman Sachs, Delta Air Lines, United Healthcare, and Baker Hughes report before the opening bell. Google, SanDisk, Schlumberger, Advanced Micro Devices, and Xilinx follow in the afternoon.
Friday morning brings housing starts, building permits and the University of Michigan's consumer-sentiment index. General Electric, Morgan Stanley, Honeywell, Textron, and Kansas City Southern release their numbers as well.
