DALEVILLE — The town’s water utility’s finances have been in the red for a while, so town officials have made an adjustment.
Town Councilman Tom Roberts, a recently retired certified public accountant, noted the utility had some higher-than-normal expenses, which included $30,000 for the town’s biannual audit from the Indiana State Board of Accounts and salary increases.
“It had been losing $20,000 for year for 2-3 years,” he said during Tuesday’s meeting. “Most of that is due to how we allocate salaries.”
A portion of the utility’s funds subsidize a percentage of town workers’ salaries, including that of Clerk-Treasure Amy Roberts and her deputy, Trina Richardson.
Roberts recommended reallocating those percentages to the “other funds” category, saying it would save the water utility more than $40,000 per year.
The council approved the reallocation.
“I’m hoping this will keep us good,” Roberts said.
