Cummins, in partnership with Liberty Energy, is set to deploy the industry's first variable speed, large displacement natural gas engine designed to power hydraulic fracturing systems by the first half of 2025.
This engine will be integrated into Liberty's digiPrime hydraulic fracturing platform, marking an advancement in the completions services market.
The strategic partnership between Cummins and Liberty Energy, established in June 2024, focuses on developing this groundbreaking technology.
The Cummins HSK78G natural gas engine, initially launched in March 2019 for the power generation market, is known for its reliable performance across various natural gas sources and operating environments.
The engine's efficiency and reduced total cost of operation have now been further enhanced to meet the demands of Liberty's digiPrime platform.
Powered by a 3,000hp Cummins natural gas engine, the digiPrime pump offers a direct drive solution with high thermal efficiency, reducing fuel costs and emissions in the completions market.
This configuration not only cuts fuel costs but is also one of the lowest-emissions solutions available in the completions market.
The HSK78G engine's variable speed capability improves response time and load acceptance during hydraulic fracturing operations.
Projected maintenance data suggests that the HSK78G engine could quadruple the life to overhaul maintenance interval compared with standard diesel engines.
This extended service life means more time in the field and less downtime. Moreover, the engine's simple mechanical drive system can be serviced by technicians who are already familiar with diesel engines, facilitating smoother technology adoption.

The HSK78G base engine is adaptable, tolerating fuel methane fluctuations and varying gas compositions, while being compatible with multiple well-servicing transmissions and offering auxiliary power options.
