Cumberland Valley National Bank celebrates 120 years

Sep. 12—CORBIN — It was a festive scene last Friday at Cumberland Valley National Bank's Forest Hill Branch as employees hosted Customer Appreciation Day as part of the bank's 120th anniversary.

"We want to involve the community, who have made us so successful," Assistant Vice President Diane McKeehan said. "We want to give back [and] love serving our community all these years."

The celebration included a free lunch provided by Smokey Bear's BBQ and Catering, a tote bag filled with various goodies and the opportunity to design a customized CVNB hat.

Once a design was decided upon, CVNB Investment Executive Aaron Ball was on hand to press the embroidered stickers onto each cap.

"It's fun; everybody gets to pick out what they want," Ball said, adding of the milestone anniversary, "I think it speaks a lot to the bank and to our leadership as well. I've worked in several different places for several different banks and Cumberland Valley...you feel like home when you work here. The people you work with, you get to know them and everybody tries to take care of one another and take care of the clients."

According to their website, CVNB started out under the name East Bernstadt Banking Company, organized by W.Q. Harned in 1904.

Though the closing of major coal mining operations had an adverse effect on business in East Bernstadt, the bank thrived there until it was moved to the Catching Building in London, thus becoming the Second National Bank of London.

The Second National Bank continued to grow with the community until October 1, 1972, when a name change to Cumberland Valley National Bank occurred.

On July 1, 1993, another chapter was added to CVNB history with its merger with Corbin Deposit Bank & Trust under a National Charter — becoming the largest bank in southeastern Kentucky.

Today CVNB has 15 locations and many conveniently-located ATMs to serve our customers in Berea, Corbin, Lexington, London, Louisville, Richmond and Somerset.

Another Customer Appreciation Day celebration is planned at the London Main Office, 100 S. Main St., October 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
