Crystal International Outlines 2030 Sustainability Goals

In This Article:

Global apparel manufacturer Crystal International has laid out its sustainability goals for the next five years as part of its Crystal Sustainability Vision 2030 plan.

Building on recent victories such as reducing 4.7 percent absolute carbon emissions and 23 percent freshwater use per garment year over year, the plan outlines the Hong Kong-based company’s goals for addressing a broader spectrum of sustainability issues by 2030.

“We gear up to tackle wider global sustainability issues by the end of the decade,” said Catherine Chiu, vice president of corporate quality and sustainability, Crystal International. “To achieve this long-term ambition, we will join hands with industry peers to scale up in different areas in order to support our determination in the long run. We believe we could take sustainable fashion to the new heights.”

The Crystal Sustainability Vision 2030 plan covers three goal categories: Regenerating nature, resourcing people and revitalizing community. To achieve that, the plan focuses on targets associated with climate, circularity, water, biodiversity, wellness, equity, employee engagement, and community engagement and partnership.

Built in reference to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals—which include clean water and sanitation, climate action, affordable and clean energy, no poverty and zero hunger—the Crystal Sustainability Vision 2030 underwent rounds of industry best-practice research and holistic analysis of macro issues. As the plan is implemented, each of the company’s more than 20 factories will have its own specifically designed goals and timelines.

Crystal outlined a number of sustainability advancements earlier this year in its annual sustainability report, including significantly improving water resource and wastewater management in its denim factory in Cambodia, dropping freshwater intensity per piece by around 30 percent.

In September, Crystal announced a partnership with electricity-free cooling innovator i2Cool to launch a pilot solar cooling program at two buildings in the company’s lifestyle wear factory in China. For that program, Crystal installed i2Cool’s proprietary iPaint panels on the buildings’ rooftops, covering an area of more than 7,000 square meters and reducing the indoor temperature by around 4-5 degrees Celsius, saving around 200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

Moving forward, Crystal has said it will continue to ramp up action to meet the goals of the Crystal Sustainability Vision 2030, improve circularity and become net zero.
