CUMBERLAND — Allegany County’s Tax and Utility office will add a processing fee to all transactions made with a credit or debit card beginning May 1.
The county previously absorbed about $500,000 in card processing annually, county officials said in a release.
“This change allows the county to better allocate taxpayer dollars toward essential services,” the release says.
The new processing fee will be 3.95% of the total transaction amount or a minimum charge of $2.50, whichever is greater. Fees are non-refundable.
Payments made by cash or check, including e-check, will not incur processing fees.
The previous $2 partial payment fee for paying a bill in installments has been eliminated.
