Company fined in St. Joseph worker's death

Sep. 27—An Oklahoma construction contractor will pay $370,680 in penalties for safety violations that resulted in a worker's death in St. Joseph nearly four years ago.

Skinner Tank Co. agreed to pay civil and criminal penalties to avoid federal prosecution on one count of ignoring federal safety regulations.

The deferred prosecution agreement followed a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigation into the death of 56-year-old Tony Wilson on Oct. 14, 2019. OSHA said that the employee died after falling more than 50 feet while working on the roof of a storage tank at Ag Processing, 900 S.W. Lower Lake Road.

OSHA found that the tank company did not require employees to use fall protection. The investigation also revealed that the company provided inaccurate information that wearing fall protection presented a greater hazard than not doing so.

The deferred prosecution agreement was filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City.
