Should You Take Comfort From Insider Transactions At Akouos, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKUS)?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So before you buy or sell Akouos, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKUS), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

Akouos Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Heather Preston bought US$100k worth of shares at a price of US$17.00 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$13.44 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Heather Preston.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. From our data, it seems that Akouos insiders own 1.3% of the company, worth about US$5.9m. Overall, this level of ownership isn't that impressive, but it's certainly better than nothing!
