PETOSKEY — A longtime staple in the downtown Petoskey shopping district, the Circus Shop is hosting a “Greatest Sale in the World” event during the Memorial Day weekend.
The sale will start on Friday and continue until 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 28. The estate sale includes a little bit of everything from vintage prints and posters, to circus paraphernalia, to clothing, to dinnerware and more.
The Circus Shop, a children’s clothing boutique, is 77 years old. The building at 323 E. Mitchell St. is a historic property in the city. It once housed an ice cream shop and a restaurant.

According to a historical plaque outside the business, Edna McCartney Danser and her family have sold children’s clothing under the name of The Circus Shop beginning in 1949, moving from the 325 E. Mitchell St. location to the 323 address in 1964. In 1997, Lynn McCartney Duse and her daughter Marnie continued the Circus Shop family tradition. Duse died on Jan. 11 at age 80.
After the sale, the shop will be closing its doors for good.
