Comcast Upgrades Xfinity TV

Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) recently enhanced its Xfinity TV player application by incorporating content download feature using the Internet. Xfinity TV is the TVEverywhere service of Comcast. So far, the company has offered only content streaming services, whereby the subscribers were able to stream contents on demand. But now, Xfinity TV subscribers will be able to download movies and TV shows in their mobile devices over an available WiFi connection and watch the content offline.

Comcast has a technology joint venture with Verizon Wireless. As part of this venture, every 4G LTE subscriber of Verizon Wireless will have the option to download or stream the same contents in their respective mobile devices using the LTE network. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group plc. (VOD).

Comcast is gradually enhancing the features of its next-generation Xfinity TV. The new Xfinity TV set top box has an innovative system that enables subscribers to quickly navigate between live and on-demand programming. A new user interface incorporates content from Facebook Inc. (FB), Internet Radio of Pandora Media Inc. (P), news, and weather applications. Earlier, Comcast entered into an agreement with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to enable its subscribers to access Xfinity TV online content from the Microsoft Xbox. Xfinity Home product is now available in 95% of the total footprint of Comcast.

Comcast has already launched its major innovative product - Xfinity Streampix - a subscription based, on-demand video streaming service. This is a big leap in the company’s pay-TV offerings, which provides traditional TV shows and Xfinity on-demand shows on TV sets and broadband enabled devices. With Xfinity Streampix, a customer can instantly view movies and TV shows on multiple screens, namely TV sets, computers, and mobile devices from anywhere.
