Liner operator CMA CGM announced changes to its Amerigo container service connecting the Mediterranean with North America.

Launching from a new call at Salerno on Feb. 10, the revamped service offers enlarged coverage from southern to northern Italian ports.

The Marseilles, France-based carrier in a release said the new, direct call at Salerno enables Amerigo to serve southern Italy markets.

The new rotation is Algeciras, Spain – Salerno – La Spezia, Italy – Genoa, Italy – Vado Ligure, Italy – Valencia, Spain – Algeciras – New York – Norfolk, Virginia – Savannah, Georgia – Miami.

CMA CGM said the service from Valencia offers 12-day transit to New York, 15 days to Norfolk, 17 days to Savannah and 20 days to Miami.

The westbound and eastbound calls in Algeciras offer convenient connections to CMA CGM’s network.

Amerigo deploys vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In related news, CMA CGM said it is postponing for a fifth time implementation of the PSS05 peak season surcharge for freight originating from the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East Gulf, Red Sea and Egypt to destinations on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts.

The $1,000 surcharge on all containers scheduled for Jan. 18 is now effective Feb. 1, until further notice.

The French carrier gave no further details. CMA CGM has been the lone global container line to continue scheduled services through the Red Sea/Suez Canal route despite attacks on shipping by Houthi rebels based in Yemen.

Also, CMA CGM announced that effective Jan. 17, it will apply a rate restoration initiative (RRI02) on cargo moving from Guyana and Suriname, South America, to the United States.

The charges are $350 per 20-foot container and $700 per 40-foot box.

This article was updated Jan. 14 to add information about a postponed surcharge, and rate restoration charge.
