CORRECTED-China reports 1,988 new COVID cases for Sept 2 vs 2,038 day earlier

BEIJING, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Mainland China reported 1,988 new coronavirus cases for Sept. 2, of which 502 were symptomatic and 1,486 were asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Saturday.

That compared with 2,038 new cases a day earlier of which 373 were symptomatic and 1,665 were asymptomatic infections that China counts separately.

There were no new deaths, keeping the nation's fatalities at 5,226. As of Friday, mainland China had confirmed 244,324 cases with symptoms.

China's capital Beijing reported one local symptomatic case, the same as the previous day, and one asymptomatic case, compared with none a day earlier, according to local government data.

Financial hub Shanghai reported one new local symptomatic case and two asymptomatic cases, versus one symptomatic and no asymptomatic cases the day before, local government data showed.

The southern technology hub of Shenzhen, which tightened restrictions at entertainment venues and restaurant dining from Thursday, reported 87 new locally transmitted COVID infections, the same as a day earlier.

The southwestern metropolis of Chengdu, which announced a lockdown and launched four days of citywide testing on Thursday, reported 105 new local symptomatic cases and 50 asymptomatic cases for Friday, provincial government data showed. (Reporting by Eduardo Baptista)
