Chart Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLS) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 17% in the last quarter. But in three years the returns have been great. The share price marched upwards over that time, and is now 196% higher than it was. It's not uncommon to see a share price retrace a bit, after a big gain. The thing to consider is whether the underlying business is doing well enough to support the current price.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During three years of share price growth, Chart Industries moved from a loss to profitability. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Chart Industries shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 11% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 1.7% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. Most investors take the time to check the data on insider transactions.
