Building materials company Cemex has supplied more than 56,000 cubic yards of sustainable building materials for the Mission Rock development in San Francisco, California, US.

The materials are being used for the first phase of construction of the 28-acre multiphase, mixed-use development.

This development is a collaboration between Tishman Speyer, the San Francisco Giants, and the Port of San Francisco.

The general contractor, Webcor, held the ground-breaking event of Mission Rock in 2020.

The contractor has partnered with Cemex to use its lower-carbon Vertua concrete for the foundations of the neighbourhood's initial three buildings.

These buildings include two residential structures, The Canyon and Verde, and an office building that will serve as Visa’s new Market Support Center.

The first phase of the development is scheduled for completion in late 2024.

Cemex US West Region regional president Francisco Rivera said: “We are excited to contribute to a forward-thinking project such as Mission Rock by delivering our eco-conscious building materials, advancing sustainability efforts in San Francisco.

“In providing Vertua to urban development projects, Cemex is driving innovation further to sustainably solve the world’s construction challenges.”

The company's use of Vertua concrete solutions aligns with San Francisco's aim to become a carbon-neutral city.

Vertua is part of Cemex's portfolio designed to focus on five attributes: lower carbon, energy efficiency, recycled materials, water conservation, and design optimisation.

In May this year, Cemex joined forces with the Mission Possible Partnership and the Bezos Earth Fund to explore decarbonisation strategies at Cemex’s Balcones cement plant in Texas, US.
