CARBIOS, a leader in biorecycling technology, and Selenis, a leading supplier of speciality polyester solutions, have announced a strategic partnership to produce polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) from recycled PET (rPET) waste for the cosmetic and healthcare industries.

The partnership leverages CARBIOS' enzymatic depolymerisation technology to break down rPET waste into its constituent monomers, which are then repolymerised by Selenis into high-quality PETG.

This sustainable PETG material offers the same properties as virgin PETG, making it a suitable replacement for traditional packaging materials in these sectors.

PETG is a popular choice for cosmetic and healthcare packaging due to its clarity, durability, and resistance to chemicals.

By using rPET, CARBIOS and Selenis are helping to reduce plastic waste and promote a more circular economy.

The partnership is expected to increase the availability of sustainable packaging options for cosmetic and healthcare companies, addressing growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products.

Additionally, it aligns with industry trends towards using recycled materials and reducing reliance on virgin plastic.

"This high-speciality, premium material meets demanding quality requirements whilst also contributing to the transition to more sustainable packaging materials," said Emmanuel Ladent, CEO at CARBIOS.

"The partnership will open new markets for CARBIOS, notably the healthcare sector, as we continue our worldwide commercial deployment."

"By combining our 65 years of expertise with CARBIOS’ pioneering biorecycling technology that ensures high-quality monomers for the production of virgin-like PETG, we are advancing in the development of sustainable materials to meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions in the cosmetic and healthcare sectors," added Eduardo Santos, corporate strategy head at Selenis.

"CARBIOS and Selenis partner to produce sustainable PETG" was originally created and published by Packaging Gateway, a GlobalData owned brand.
