Capital One Financial Insiders Sold US$11m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

In This Article:

The fact that multiple Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE:COF) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Capital One Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider, Ravi Raghu, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.1m worth of shares at a price of US$165 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$203, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 48% of Ravi Raghu's stake.

In the last year Capital One Financial insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!
