Canton-Massillon among top metropolitan areas with high foreclosures in November

CANTON − The Canton-Massillon metropolitan area had one of the highest foreclosure rates in November for statistical areas with a population of at least 200,000.

That's according to the November 2023 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report that was recently released by Attom, a real estate data provider. Overall, there were 32,120 foreclosures nationwide ― a 5% increase from November of last year but a 7% decrease from October.

“While we’ve observed a modest decrease in U.S. foreclosure activity most likely due to seasonal factors, it’s essential to note that these fluctuations are a part of the cyclical nature of the market,” Attom CEO Rob Barber is quoted in the report. “As we look ahead to 2024, we anticipate a potential uptick in foreclosure activity as various economic factors evolve and market dynamics shift."

The Canton area had the third most foreclosures for statistical areas of its size with one for every 1,820 housing units. The Canton-Massillon metropolitan statistical area is comprised of Stark and Carroll counties and had a population of 401,574 as of the 2020 Census.

The other similar-sized metro areas in the top five were: Bakersfield, California, with one foreclosure for every 1,595 housing units; Cleveland with one in 1,818 units; Columbia, South Carolina, with one in 1,922 units; and Stockton, California, with one in 1,961 units.

Cleveland also was included in the top foreclosures for metropolitan areas with a population greater than 1 million. The others were Baltimore; Las Vegas; Philadelphia; and Riverside, California.

The states with the greatest number of foreclosure filings ― which include default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions ― were Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, South Carolina and New Jersey.
