May 22 - BYD Company (BYDDF) surpassed Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) in monthly electric vehicle registrations in Europe for the first time, marking a potential shift in the region's competitive EV landscape, according to April data from Jato Dynamics.
The Chinese automaker registered 7,231 vehicles across European markets last month, up 169% from a year ago. The figure narrowly outpaced Tesla's estimated April total, which dropped 49% year-over-year as the U.S. brand grappled with a Model Y production shift and mounting criticism tied to CEO Elon Musk's political involvement in Europe.
While the difference in volumes was marginal, analysts say the implications could be far-reaching. This is a watershed moment for Europe's car market, Jato analyst Felipe Munoz said.
The report follows BYD's launch of the Dolphin Surf in Europe earlier this week. The new low-cost EV enters the market as the company's tenth model available in the region. Promotional pricing starts at 19,990, with standard models ranging from 22,950 to 24,990, offering between 322 to 507 kilometers of range.
