New Business: Planet Fitness to open in former Bed Bath & Beyond; Evviva Trattoria planned in Bedford

Jan. 6—HAMPTON-BASED Planet Fitness continues to grow and add new locations in the state where it all started more than three decades ago.

New clubs have opened in Nashua and Hooksett in time for the New Year's rush with another one planned in Bedford. The Stratham location went through a major renovation and expansion.

The new Planet Fitness at 281 Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua is the third in the Gate City and includes a wide array of cardio, strength training and recovery equipment, according to a news release. The gym in the former Eastern Mountain Sports spot opened back in November, but a grand opening is planned for Jan. 16.

On Jan. 25, the grand opening for the location in the former Goodwill Store at 1292 Hooksett Road in Hooksett will take place.

The Stratham location now has all-new equipment, fresh paint and a new Black Card Spa.

Planet Fitness, which was founded in 1992 in Dover, has become one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the United States, according to a news release.

The company, which prides itself on its trademarked "Judgement-Free Zone" slogan, saw a major change last year with former Gov. Craig Benson being named interim CEO of the fitness company. The company did not disclose what led to the departure of former CEO Chris Rondeau.

In the company's third quarter 2023 results, Benson said the company had 18.5 million members and opened 26 new locations, including two corporate-owned and 24 franchisee-owned stores.

Planet Fitness had 2,498 locations globally as of Sept. 30.

Few details are available on the future Bedford location, but site plans show Planet Fitness will take up 35,860 square feet of the former Bed Bath & Beyond in the Bedford Grove plaza, 3-7 Colby Court. A 6,643-square-foot space was cut out of the footprint of the former retail store.

A multimillion-dollar renovation was completed in 2019. The plaza is owned by Brixmor.

Evviva planned for Bedford

In the same plaza as the planned Planet Fitness,

Italian restaurant Evviva Trattoria is also set to open. Hopefully not too many are lured away from their fitness routines.

The 7,000-square-foot restaurant will be next to Boston Interiors, according to site plans on Brixmor's website.

The small restaurant chain features a "modern Italian food served in a comfortable and casual atmosphere." The restaurant is part of the ownership of 110 Grill, which has locations across New Hampshire, including in downtown Manchester.

Evviva has seven locations in Massachusetts and in October opened at The Ridge, a shopping mall in Rochester.
