A Burlington store could open in time for the holiday season at the Interstate Shopping Center just off Route 17 in Ramsey, according to Jerry Welkis, a broker and president of Welco Realty, which arranged the deal.
Burlington will occupy a 25,000-square-foot storefront that formerly housed a DSW shoe store. DSW is in turn moving to a smaller storefront at the shopping center, Welkis said.
Known formerly as Burlington Coat Factory, Burlington is a national off-price department store chain known for its deals and steep discounts on designer clothing brands.
"We look forward to opening this new location in Ramsey, N.J., this fall, bringing great bargains and job opportunities to the local community," said Charise Lewis, a spokesperson for Burlington.
Burlington's owners have “done a lot over time to really improve the look of their stores, to improve their brands, to improve their offerings to customers,” said Matthew Harding, chief executive officer of North Plainfield-based Levin Management Corp., a commercial real estate services firm.
The planned opening comes as Burlington Stores more broadly scoops up dozens of high-value leases formerly owned by Bed Bath & Beyond across the nation after the home goods chain declared bankruptcy in April.
According to bankruptcy records and CNBC, Burlington is taking 50 of 109 former Bed Bath & Beyond leases, for a combined $13.53 million.
That includes the Bed Bath & Beyond stores in Clifton, Hamilton and Cherry Hill, and the buybuy Baby stores in Livingston and West Long Branch, and a distribution center in Secaucus.
Many Bed Bath & Beyond stores were historically in “good-quality, well-located” spaces that are easily accessible and highly visible, Harding said.
The Bed Bath & Beyond in Ramsey at the Interstate Shopping Center closed down, but an announcement of a replacement tenant has not yet been made public.
