Jan. 20—An educator with nearly 15 years of experience has been named the Caldwell County Schools exceptional children's director.
The Caldwell County Board of Education approved hiring Heather Wilson during its Jan. 8 meeting. Wilson begins work on Feb. 19.
Wilson most recently worked as assistant exceptional children's director for the Catawba County School System.
She was hired due to her proven leadership in the field of special education and other related services, said Libby Brown, Caldwell County Schools public information officer.
Wilson brings to Caldwell County Schools a wealth of experience as she has held administrative and classroom positions since 2009 and has worked as a teacher, program specialist, coordinator, and exceptional children's assistant director.
"We are confident that she will play a pivotal role in advancing our commitment to excellence and inclusivity in education," said Superintendent Don Phipps. "She will be an invaluable asset to our Exceptional Children's Department and will have a positive impact on the lives of our exceptional students."
Wilson received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk and a master's degree in administration from Western Carolina University.
Wilson succeeds interim exceptional children's director Robyn Helton, who has been in place since the summer.
Travis Gillespie, the former exceptional children's director, accepted a job with Watauga County Schools where he works as principal of Hardin Park Elementary in Boone.
