Failing To Discuss Money Hinders Their Understanding of Finances

“Parents are so concerned for their children, they don’t even bring money into their conversations,” said David Milo, financial advisor and owner of Independent Lending.

The Consequences

For one, Milo said they will lack an understanding of commercial dynamics. “Many children grow up with the mindset that money is combined with secrets and not a belief system that can be altered or controlled.”

He also said they will end up with a limited understanding of effort. “Having not been taught the process of earning, saving and how to spend, children tend to think that money is infinite.”

Lastly, Milo explained that they’ll also have reduced self-efficacy as adults.

“I have witnessed multiple adult children being overly dependent on their parents because of their financial and emotional weakness.”

Avoid Talking About Money Education Too Late

Milo said it’s best to teach kids how to earn money slowly through chores, or setting goals with toys.
