Big Rock Brewery adopts sustainable Earthring packaging

In This Article:

Big Rock Brewery is clinking glasses to a greener future with the introduction of Earthrings, a sustainable packaging solution for its canned beverages.

This move marks a significant shift away from traditional plastic can rings, underscoring Big Rock's commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Earthrings are crafted from layers of fibre cardboard with a biodegradable, moisture-resistant coating.

This packaging boasts 100% recyclability and compostability, with environmentally friendly inks used throughout the manufacturing process.

“This transition aligns with Big Rock Brewery’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices,” said David Kinder, Big Rock president and CEO.

“The installation of the equipment to affix Earthrings to our products represents about one-half of our capital budget this year and will help uphold the quality and presentation of Big Rock Brewery products while also supporting our environmental goals and allow us to comply with the ban on single-use plastics.”

Earthrings decompose naturally, minimising the burden on landfills and reducing the risk of harm to wildlife.

Consumers are empowered to choose between recycling or composting Earthrings, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint throughout the products' life cycle.

Despite their eco-friendly nature, Earthrings are designed for strength and durability, safeguarding Big Rock's beverages during transportation and retail display.

Big Rock estimates that this switch will divert a substantial 23,529kg of plastic waste from landfills annually.

Big Rock has invested heavily in its future by installing new equipment specifically designed to handle Earthrings. This ensures a smooth transition to the new packaging solution while maintaining operational efficiency.

The adoption of Earthrings signifies Big Rock Brewery's commitment to environmental responsibility.

This initiative comes alongside a recently announced partnership with Hy-Line Express for product distribution through a cross-docking facility in Edmonton.

Together, these moves demonstrate Big Rock's dedication to sustainable practices and operational excellence.
