“To start a business you have to be super proactive. You can't just react to whatever's happening around you. You have to ask for what you want. You have to go after it”, Betches CEO Jordana Abraham told Yahoo Finance. “And it's really important to just be aggressive.”
Media company Betches was started in 2011 by CEO Jordana Abraham, COO Samantha Fishbein, and CCO Aleen Kuperman’s while they were seniors at Cornell University. Betches now has 6.6 million followers on Instagram and 185,000 followers on Twitter.
In 2017, according to Forbes, Betches pulled in more than $5 million in revenue. Betches also made it on the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2019 and has grown from being just the three cofounders to 15 full-time staff members.
“Betches is different from its competitors because we speak to our audience in a way that they would speak to each other and to their friends. We are known for our extremely honest and humorous voice which tends to push the envelope a bit, which we find that many of our competitors don't do”, Betches COO Samathan Fishbein told Yahoo Finance.
“We would give other women the tip that it's not as easy as it looks on Instagram, and that overnight success can take years. And it may look like everyone just has it together and knows what they're doing all the time, but it actually takes a lot of hard work, a lot of putting yourself out there in situations that you are not familiar with and are not expected to be familiar with, and going into the unknown to some degree, and then figuring out how you want to take your business based on a lot of factors that are not in your control”, she added.
